Google Cracks Down on Mobile Friendliness

July 8, 2016
Google is working harder than ever to make sure websites are mobile friendly. Recently, we discovered a notification about mobile friendliness that has been tested for awhile, but is coming up more and more frequently. A lot of sties out there have pages that work on a desktop computer, but may not work at all on a cell phone. They may be set up to redirect someone to the homepage of the site or a less relevant page that does work. When this happens, people get confused or frustrated and click back to the search results. Google notes these actions and uses the data to develop ways to make sure these sites aren't messing up people's search experience. Now when you run across such a website on your cell phone, you'll see something like this: google's new alert for mobile friendliness This message is designed to deter mobile users from entering these sites, warning them that they will likely have a hard time accessing the content on that page. Some websites in the homebuilding industry have yet to upgrade to a responsive, mobile-friendly design. We can expect to see these sites decrease in SEO value until they are only discoverable via online marketing or by people searching for the company directly. Some builder websites that are mobile-friendly still struggle to compete in search results with national builders and sites like Zillow and Trulia, so is it actually worth it to upgrade to a mobile-friendly site if the chances of ranking well are slim anyway? Absolutely. The ultimate consideration here is the homebuyer. We know that nearly half of all web traffic in the homebuilding industry is coming from a cell phone, so we want to make sure we're delivering websites to these users that are easy and enjoyable to browse. Otherwise, they'll likely become frustrated and move on to the next builder.
